Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a dental treatment carried out to save and repair an infected or decayed tooth. The process of getting rid of the infection and sealing the canal is what is referred to as an endodontic treatment or root canal.

There are various causes of infection including accidental fracture and decay. Root canal therapy is the area of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dental pulp disorders. Basically, the main purpose of the treatment procedure is to save the injured or diseased teeth. Previously, infected teeth would simply be removed without considering any alternatives. However, you don’t have to get rid of your teeth today when there is an opportunity to save it.

Root canal therapy should be done before the disease or infection gets into the bone. Periodic check-ups and exams with your dentist can help you avoid severe complications. Some of the symptoms for possible root canal treatment include:

  • Redness and swelling of the gums
  • Discoloration of a tooth
  • Severe toothache and possibly a headache
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold.

Procedure

The procedure involves removing the pulp tissue in order to extract the infection. Your dentist may drill down into the pulp chamber to get rid of the infected tissue before filling and sealing the root canal to prevent any infections in the future. The procedure may take between one and two hours depending on your complication.

A local anesthesia may be used to ensure you have a pain-free and comfortable experience during the procedure. Your dentist may recommend crowns after the root canal to help in reinforcing the tooth. Crowns are also useful when it comes to preventing tooth breakage and cracking.

You might experience sensitivity after a root canal procedure in the first few days. It is important you maintain good brushing and flossing habits after the treatment.
